Katie Keane samples the Signature Dish at Francesca’s for WanakaFest

The lead up to Wanakafest has seen the On Mag crew wining and dining all over Wanaka as we embraced our judging role for the Signature Dish competition. Having five restaurants to visit in a week was a delicious challenge, seeing us sample the wares of Bistro Gentil, Edgewater Resort, Francesca’s Italian Kitchen, Lone Star and Sailz Lake Hawea. Each venue entered a ‘Signature Dish’ which showcased the talents of their chefs in using local ingredients to craft a meal matched with local wine. The meals were on the menu for the public to vote on as well, with three lucky diners randomly drawn to score a foodie pass at the Lake Wanaka Wine and Food fest on Labour weekend. Standout dishes loved by the On staff included the delectable rabbit ragu from Francesca’s,  the innovatively presented Spring Cardrona lamb at Edgewater and the gastronomic extravagance of Bistro Gentil‘s lamb. Service was super impressive at all the places we were hosted by. We lucked in with the $6 margaritas at Lone Star, and will definitely be back there between 5 and 7pm in the near future to nab this deal again! In terms of ambiance, Francesca‘s and BG are still our favourite date restaurants (along with The White House experience). Stay tuned to read some more in-depth reviews of the meals and venues.
