The Winter Olympic Games kick off in Sochi, Russia in less than ten days, and the ON crew is stoked on the major role Wanaka will play in this global event.

With Ski Halfpipe as well as Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle appearing for the first time, this could be New Zealand’s best Winter Olympic Games yet. Several of our athletes have recently finished in the global top ten in these disciplines, including World Cup wins from skier Jossi Wells and snowboarder Christy Prior. For Wanaka, the news is even better—a majority of the ski and snowboard athletes are either from here or call Wanaka home during the winter.

With this in mind, Wanaka-based merino clothing company Mons Royale has teamed up with us here at On Magazine to set up the Winter Olympics Live From Sochi New Zealand hub at the Lake Bar.

As part of the hub, the pub will be screening the Winter Olympics live all day, every day, during the games. As well, Lake Bar will host two slopestyle dinners on the evenings of the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle event on February 9 in which Kiwi riders Shelly Gotlieb, Stefi Luxton, Christy Prior and Rebecca Torr are competing and the Men’s Ski Slopestyle competition on February 13, featuring Wanaka’s Jossi and Beau-James Wells.

For former Olympic snowboarder and Wanaka resident Juliane Bray, the hub means a space for locals to come together and create the home support she knows is so important to our Olympians.  “With so many of this year’s NZ Winter Olympians coming from Wanaka, the hub will be the spot to go with your friends and family to enjoy a slice of the games and cheer on our locals flying the flag at Sochi!” she said.

The Slopestyle dinners will include a set menu at $30 for adults and $15 for kids, along with a NZ Olympic charity raffle. Dinner bookings are essential; phone 443 2920 to reserve your table. All are also welcome to come and enjoy a drink on the night and, who knows, maybe watch Wanaka win its first Winter Olympics medal.

The Winter Olympics Live from Sochi NZ hub is proudly supported by Mt Difficulty Wines, Sorted Print and Design and Martin Cedes photography.
