Adam Barwood’s career as an alpine skier began with a school race programme at Coronet Peak. Now he’s representing New Zealand at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. He trains in the off-season in the USA and is the 2013 New Zealand National Champion in Slalom and Giant Slalom, and was named Alpine Ski Racer Athlete of the Year at the 2013 Snow Sports NZ Annual Awards.

1. Who taught you to ski/ride and where did you learn?

I first learnt to ski with the Queenstown Alpine Ski Team at Coronet Peak in 2001 (age 9) and have had a number of coaches getting me to where I am today.  I spent three years with QAST and some of my coaches included Yannick Bellon, Victor Dockal and Stephanie O’Brian. I then moved across to the Cardrona Ski Team, where my coaches included Adi Bernasconi, Tanjia Frei-Pieren, Marcel Homberger, Kyobi Wyssen and Urs Imboden.  I was with Cardrona for four years, then trained at Treble Cone Race Academy with Guenther Birgmann and Sugar Bowl Academy in the States.  It was then back to Coronet Peak with my current coach, Nils Coberger, who I have been with for the past two years. [Nils’ sister, Annelise Coberger, is New Zealand’s only Winter Olympic medallist. She won the silver in Slalom at Albertville in 1992.]

2. In five words or less, define success.

Achieving goals and having fun.

3. What do you do to get in the zone for your event?

Being focussed is really important – I tend to visualise the course after course inspection and while waiting in the start area I concentrate on warming up.

4. What’s the strangest thing you’ve done/seen/heard on a chairlft?

Semi naked Aussies celebrating Australia Day‏ in Winter Park would be up there.

5. We love Russia! Especially vodka, Cossack dancers and that massage thing where they beat you with birch branches. What else is cool about Russia?

Sputnik, Babushka dolls, and some cool architecture.
