Wellington musical wunderkind Cory Champion is pointing the compass south for New Year’s Eve, to play with Pacific Heights at Rhythm and Alps. ANNABEL WILSON gets the skinny on what keeps bringing him back to R&A, his obsession with cymbals and a few of his other favourite things…

You’re becoming a mainstay of the Rhythm and Alps event. What brings you back time and again?

The promoters! This will be my third time back for NYE, playing with Pacific Heights. Previously I’ve played with Electric Wire Hustle and Louis Baker. I haven’t come as a punter before but have always had a couple hours to roam around and it’s a nice festival; I’m happy to be coming back.

Describe R&A in five words.

Colder than expected, after dark.

What’s the secret to working long hours and late nights?

Have something worth working hard/late for. Otherwise go to sleep! There’s not many things better than sleeping…

Favourite song of 2016?

It’s actually from 1989 but Soho – Hot Music

Most treasured possession?

My cymbals. I was introduced to cymbal maker Craig Lauritsen a few years ago through Riki Gooch and Adam Page. He lives in Adelaide and makes incredible cymbals from blanks imported from Turkey. By hand he lathes and shapes these ugly round bits of brown alloy into incredible instruments. I’ve got four cymbals from him and I use them for practically every gig. They so precious to me and they’re getting better with age.

Favourite ‘Greatest Hits’ album?

I’ve been enjoying Prince – The Hits/The B-Sides which is a greatest hits of sorts. Its a 3-disc set and was released in 1993 and of particular interest is the B-Sides. It’s been in the car for the last while.

Dream jam-session partner/s?

MonoNeon, Missy Elliott, Moodymann, Herbie Hancock, Nick Hakim, Isaiah Sharkey, Riki Gooch.

Catch Cory with Pacific Heights, 7.20 – 8.20pm, after Isaac Chambers and before Arma del Amor on the Alpine Arena stage at R&A, 31 December 2016. Limited tickets for all R&A events are on sale now and can be purchased at www.rhythmandalps.co.nz.
