ONmag caught up with the musical magnate Claire Cowan to find out the nitty gritty on All Is Full of Love – Blackbird Ensemble’s star-studded show which opens Björk’s songbook and makes it their own. Read ON to find out what inspires and drives Cowan, what’s in her fridge and where you can catch one of the Ensemble’s upcoming South Island gigs.

What’s happening in the world of Claire Cowan at the moment?

I’m just wrapping up a telefeature thriller score, and preparing for our Blackbird Ensemble tour whilst trying to work on my first full length ballet score.

Describe Blackbird Ensemble in five words.

 Dreamy. Immersive. Powerful. Mesmeric. Unexpected.

Which living person do you most admire and why?

Jacinda Ardern. Because she’s a supermum and role model to an entire nation of girls growing up believing they can do anything!

What wakes you up in the middle of the night?

My neighbour’s Burmese cat trying to sleep on my face.

What is your most treasured possession?

I have many musical treasures.. I really love my harpsichord though.

If we raided your fridge, what would we find?

Lots of frozen lasagne and fresh pineapple. Have been stockpiling comfort food for the long days and nights at work and making virgin pina colada ice-blocks for the after work bike ride home.

The best thing about Friday is…

Breathing a big sigh of relief I got through the week… and can sleep in on Saturday.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Music is worth my life’s devotion. It’s that important.

What’s ON for Autumn?

Taking some time to lap up the fading summer days – make the most of the sunshine.

What’s OFF?

Plastic – trying to eliminate as much from my life as possible..and autumns as good a time as any to begin…

What do you like best about Wanaka’s Festival of Colour

The local cuisine and the views across the lake… such a beautiful town to visit, only wish I could stay longer!
