Local bartender and owner of Lalaland Lounge Bar Wanaka Shannon Sanderson has once again made it into the national finals of the Diageo World Class Competition.

The Diageo World Class Competition is a year-long journey of qualifiers and heats at national and regional levels, with the Global Final seeing the 50 best bartenders in the world compete in a series of innovative challenges in Great Britain until the Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year is crowned.

World Class New Zealand recently announced the winners of the New Zealand regional qualifiers, and Mr Sanderson received the highest point score across the board, placing him in the top 5 competitors, who will now go on to compete in the New Zealand national qualifiers.

Mr Sanderson is the only competitor from the South Island and he is excited to be representing both Wanaka and the wider South Island region in the nationals. “I’m honoured to be representing Wanaka in the nationals and I’m proud to see Wanaka being recognised for more than just the wine culture that is synonymous with Central Otago” said Mr Sanderson.

This is the second year that New Zealand has been included in the worldwide competition. Last year Mr Sanderson ranked 3rd in the National Finals and is looking forward to another opportunity to be named the New Zealand champion.

The New Zealand finals, the winner of which will represent New Zealand in the international finals in Great Britain from 28 July to 1 August, are being held in Auckland next Monday 23 June.
