It’s been a winning week for the staff at YAMI Sounz Summit, with all Junior and Youth places sold out, and a grant received from Otago Community Trust.
Otago Community Trust has donated $4740.00 to assist with funding the workshops and evening public performances. “We’re beyond stoked”, says Assistant Director Martine Harding. “This can really help lift the event, along with the incredible support from the local community and major supporters.”
The YAMI (Youth and Adults in the Music Industry) summit (May 14th and 15th) is bringing in high profile tutors from NZ and LA including managers, CEOs and directors from NZ on Air, New Zealand Music Commission, Mind Your Music, APRA and Recorded Music NZ. Add to that artist-tutors including Barnaby Weir (The Black Seeds), Anika Moa, Julia Deans, Jon Toogood, Laughton Kora, Sam Flynn Scott (The Phoenix Foundation), Warren Maxwell and Rio Hemopo (TrinityRoots) and the reasons for the summit’s popularity are obvious.
Event Manager, Rebecca Rowe comments, “Witnessing the strong positive response at this stage from participants, staff and tutors shows us what a magnificent weekend we’re all aiming for”.
Director Lynne Christie adds that an important aim of the summit is to build up a supportive infrastructure within the NZ music industry. “It’s the producers, managers, promoters and techs who all play a pivotal role in the music world, and we are still in the early stages of acknowledging and elevating these career paths.”
Tickets are still available for both evening performances – Ladi6 and Arma Del Amor on Saturday 14th and Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and YAMI participants on Sunday 15th. Both events are in the Lake Wanaka Centre. A very limited number of places are still available for the weekend summit.  Run by Lake Wanaka Sounz Incorporated, all profits from the summit and evening performances go towards supporting musicians and music education, both locally and nationally.
